iota Tips

The Home Base communicates with the iota using a special long range radio technology.  There are a few things a user can do to optimize the quality of the connection between the iota and Home Base. Following these suggestions will give the iota maximal coverage range and battery life:

  1. Try to put the iota in a place where it has a clear view of the sky (i.e. dashboard of a car instead of the trunk).
  2. Only open map and ask for the iota’s location when necessary.  This saves battery life.
  3. When placing the iota on a pet or child, try leaving it facing toward the sky (i.e. on the back of a dog's neck as opposed to under the chin).

Do we need open sky for it to work, or do the tracker work inside building or where houses as well? say you had a 1000 foot warehouse. Would it be able to locate the doggy on the other side or would dog have to be out in open sky?

Hi Craig. There are several factors that contribute to the iota's ability to see GPS satellites including building construction materials/thickness, tree coverage, and the iota's proximity to metallic materials. Generally speaking, the iota will have trouble reporting its location indoors, but it is impossible to say with certainty whether you would get a location on your dog in the conditions you have described. Best, Dan

I have the Iota on my dog, clear view of the sky and the last several days GPS has picked up no signal at all
